Archie Griffin to be honored with naming gift
The ballroom at the new Ohio Union building at Ohio State will be named in honor of Archie Griffin to reflect the wishes of a private donor who has given $2 million to be split evenly between the Alumni Association and the construction of the university’s new Ohio Union. The gift was made to honor Griffin’s achievements as a student athlete as well as the inspiring leadership he has provided to the university throughout his career. In accordance with the donor’s wishes, his/her name is not being announced. www.osu.edu/news/newsitem2683

Ohio State leads country in AAAS Fellows named
Seventeen faculty and staff at Ohio State have been named as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the largest group chosen from any single university in the country to receive this honor. The list of 531 researchers, scientists, and scholars receiving this designation was published in the current issue of the journal Science. Strickland appoints Lissner to statewide panel
Scott Lissner, Americans With Disabilities Act Coordinator at Ohio State, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities. The 21-member council was created in 1982 to advise the governor and general assembly on disability issues affecting the lives of more than 1.9 million Ohioans with disabilities. In addition to informing state policy, the Governor’s Council promotes equality, access, employment and independence for individuals with disabilities through local, state and national partnerships. http://oncampus.osu.edu/2010/01/strickland-appoints-lissner/

RESEARCH NEWS

Small rise in consumer debt stress not worrying, economist says
Consumers—especially women—felt slightly more stress concerning their debt during December, but the increase was relatively small considering their holiday shopping sprees, a new survey suggests. The Consumer Debt Stress Index was up less than two percent in December, to 119.8 from its November value of 118.0. “Given the increased holiday spending by American consumers, the relatively small rise in consumer stress is not too worrying,” said Lucia Dunn, professor of economics at Ohio State and one of the leaders of the DSI. www.osu.edu/news/newsitem2675

In all the galaxy, just 15 percent of solar systems are like ours

In their quest to find solar systems analogous to ours, astronomers have determined how common our solar system is. They’ve concluded that about 15 percent of stars in the galaxy host systems of planets like our own, with several gas giant planets in the outer part of the solar system. The find comes from a worldwide collaboration headquartered at Ohio State called the Microlensing Follow-Up Network (MicroFUN), which searches the sky for extrasolar planets. http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/planetrare.htm

Yoga reduces cytokine levels known to promote inflammation
Regularly practicing yoga exercises may lower a number of compounds in the blood and reduce the level of inflammation that normally rises because of both normal aging and stress, a new study has shown. The study, done by Ohio State researchers and just reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, showed that women who routinely practiced yoga had lower amounts of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in their blood. http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/yogastress.htm

ATHLETIC NEWS

Football: Ohio State-Marshall game set for Thursday, Sept. 2
The 2010 season football opener between Ohio State and Marshall will be Thursday evening, Sept. 2, at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Kickoff time and television plans will be announced at a later date. "This change to a Thursday night opener offers a number of positives for Ohio State," Ohio State associate vice-president and director of athletics Gene Smith explained. "Summer quarter classes end the week before, so there will be minimal campus impact on students, faculty, and staff that day." www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=204868764

Buckeyes connect with youth through Project Mentor
After final exams were completed, many students at Ohio State left Columbus and started their winter break. But not everyone was able to leave, especially those student-athletes who continued to train and compete leading up to the holidays. While it was an opportunity for them to focus on their sports, the Buckeyes also took advantage of their open schedules by participating in Project Mentor, a program run through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio. www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=204868719

Wrestling: No. 3 Buckeyes finish third at National Duals with 26-12 win over no. 5 Minnesota

Behind six wins, the No. 3 Ohio State wrestling team (11-1) finished third in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals after defeating No. 5 Minnesota, 26-12, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Buckeyes rebounded nicely from a semifinal loss to No. 2 Iowa State earlier in the day to return to double-digit scoring. Furthermore, aside from just the seven points it allowed against No. 15 Arizona State in the opening round of the National Duals, Ohio State gave up only 12 points to the Gophers. www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=87728&SPID=10403&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=204867375
