For me, this scholarship means more than simply drawing me closer to my educational goals. It also reminds me that even though I am setting off to a school in another state, there is always a network of alumni and fellow students back home who will be there to support me throughout my endeavors at my new home in Columbus.  My experiences so far have shown me that I made the right choice in going to Ohio State, but it is always comforting to know that I have my family and friends in Chicago to fall back on.

This scholarship helped cement my decision to attend The Ohio State University, which I believe is one of the best decisions I have made. This past quarter I have learned so much; not only about physics and calculus but also about how to be an adult and balance my own life. I have had so many opportunities to be immersed in the Buckeye experience, from football games to free Kings of Leon concerts to meeting Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS shoes. My professors and advisors have been very helpful in guiding my college path. I never thought that at a university this size that I would have professors that care this much. I am truly glad to be at Ohio State. GO BUCKS!

The Chicago Alumni Scholarship has greatly impacted me and my experience at Ohio State University. There is a huge transition from being a high school senior living at home and being a college student with financial independence. This scholarship helped aid in this transition of responsibility for my personal finances, and provided less reliance on my parents for fiscal needs. It has helped shape my financial responsibility to better prepare me for living on my own with a career, which is ultimately the goal after graduation.

2009 Scholarship Recipients

Megan Auld
Megan is a graduate of Maine South High School in Park Ridge.  In addition to being ranked in the top five percent of her graduating class, she was a member of the Illinois state championship constitution team, spent four years in the marching band, and organized numerous events through her continued involvement in Girl Scouts.

Kaila Dafforn
Kaila is a graduate of Naperville North High School, where she excelled academically.  Her significant contributions to the community include a service trip to Honduras to build houses and volunteer at an orphanage; helping at a nursing home; and volunteering as a principal's aide.  Kaila worked 20 hours a week during her junior and senior years and graduated a semester early in order to travel to Chennai, India for three months as a volunteer at an orphanage and school.

Alexa Harke
Alexa is a graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort.  She graduated in the top ten percent of her class of nearly 1,000 students, while playing softball for her high school and traveling teams. Her interest in Ohio State was driven in part by it's world-class veterinary school.  Alexa's love for animals led her to volunteer at the Midwest Animal Hospital; instruct Children's Wildlife Conservation classes; and complete a prairie restoration project.

We are very proud that Megan, Kaila and Alexa have chosen to become Buckeyes.  Congratulations on all that you have accomplished thus far and best wishes as you begin an exciting experience at The Ohio State University.
